Ardrossan is the largest urban centre and principal port on the eastern seaboard of the Yorke Peninsula. The town is 24 kms from the inland service and administrative centre of Maitland, 47 kms from Port Wakefield at the head of Gulf St. Vincent, and 145 kms by road from Adelaide.

The economy of the district is based mainly on primary production. Climatic conditions favour barley as the principal cereal crop, followed by wheat. Canola, lentils, peas and beans are also grown. Sheep grazing provides supplementary income through the production of wool and meat.

The district's coastline includes some of the most scenic areas on Yorke Peninsula with many natural, unspoiled beaches and a variety of land forms including rocky cliffs, long beaches and sand dunes. Accordingly, the area has become popular for seasonal coast-oriented recreational activities.

Ardrossan itself has extensive facilities for the mining and shipping of dolomite, as well as being the third largest grain bulk handling facility in the State. The town provides services and facilities for communities along the east coast of the peninsula, the rural community to the west and the ever increasing tourist population. It is a very popular holiday resort. Ardrossan is also famous for its Blue Crabs, a seafood delicacy found in the shallow mudflats.
